Please - Spay/Neuter!

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the US - and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. As a result, every year 4 to 6 million animals are euthanized because there are no homes for them.

This is a quick and super easy recipe for Liver brownies or cake. My dogs LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

LIVER BROWNIES (OR CAKE):

1 pound of raw chicken or beef livers

2 boxes of Jiffy Yellow Corn Muffin Mix

Simply blend the livers in a blender till liquefied. Pour in a mixing bowl and add 2 boxes of Jiffy corn muffin mix. Mix well and pour into cake or brownie pan(s) and cook for 15 - 20 minutes at 400 degrees.

You can also do what I did (by accident) - I mixed 1 pound of livers with 2 boxes of Jiffy mix, but I added the Jiffy mix ingredients of 2 eggs and 2/3 cup of milk. It was too soupy so I added 2 more boxes of Jiffy mix and it came out fine. Baked it the same way as on the box. In fact, that’s what I did for this 4th of July cake below. (I did not have a bone shaped cake pan, so I cut it after I baked it and then iced it with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles. I also added some Kelp powder to the recipe and then sprinkled it on top, as well. Be sure to refrigerate any uneaten portions!)

My dogs LOVE Frosty Paws - I make the ice cream version for birthday parties or special treats.

Frosty Paws Ice Cream Recipe:

In a blender mix the following - 1 ripe banana, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 tbs peanut butter, 24 oz of cottage cheese (or yogurt). Pour into a large bowl or baking dish and freeze for several hours. If it’s too frozen to serve, simply defrost for 3 minutes in microwave (use your defrost setting - not cook setting!!!!)

Here’s my version of Frosty Paws that I used for our dogs’ birthday party (I added in several scoops of Carob Powder and top it with candy sprinkles right before serving)

To make Frosty Paws Pupsicles:

Take the above recipe and add a little low sodium chicken broth to water it down just a bit, then pour into ice cube trays and freeze. This makes a wonderful treat to cool your dog down on hot summer days!

If you don’t want to mess with the above ingredients, but still want a healthy, tasty and ice cold treat for your dogs, tryThe Honest Kitchen’s Ice Pups mix - my dogs LOVE it!

ICE PUPS MIX

Oh MAN did they love these!!

The Peanut Butter ones were their favorites (and mine, too, as far as the ease of prep and the yummy smell). This is my first time making homemade cookies, so they look a little frumpy. And the mini bone-shaped ones look deformed because Nia decided to run off with the little metal cookie cutter! (And I cut myself in 3 places trying to pry it back into shape - but I digress…)

Here’s the recipes:

Peanut Butter & Honey Biscuits

3/4 cup of flour (wheat or white - I used wheat)

1 egg (or1/4 cup of Eggbeaters)

1 tbs honey (or molasses)

1 tsp of creamy peanut butter

1/4 cup of shortening

1 tsp of baking soda

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 cup rolled oats (wheat or regular - preferably quick cook)

1/2 tsp vanilla

Heat honey & peanut butter until runny (about 20 seconds in the microwave). Mix all ingredients together and drop by the spoonful onto a lightly greased cookie sheet (or roll with rolling pin between 2 sheets of floured and/or greased wax paper and then cut into cookie shapes) and bake at 350 degrees F for 8 t0 10 minutes. The recipe says it should make 40 - 50 small biscuits, but I had to double it to get that many. But these were their favorites! Also, I added about a 1/4 cup of Reese’s peanut butter chips to the mix and it came out great! I even melted some peanut butter, table cream and honey together and made a coating to spread on top (and then I added sprinkles!) In the photo below, the PB & H ones are the tall skinny bones and the weird squatty bones. They are actually pretty soft, too - so great for puppies and older dogs!

Cranberry Pumpkin Treats

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tbs brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/4 cup of dried cranberries (optional - but my dogs LOVE them!)

4 tbs Crisco or shortening

1/2 cup canned pumpkin

1 egg (or 1/4 cup EggBeaters)

1/2 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine flour, cinnamon & nutmeg then cut in shortening (I used a pastry mixing tool). In a separate bowl mix egg, milk, pumpkin and cranberries. Then combine both mixtures and stir well, until soft dough forms. Drop by the spoonful onto lightly greased cookie sheet (or roll with rolling pin between 2 sheets of floured and/or greased wax paper and cut into cookie shapes) and cook for 12 - 15 minutes. For a special touch, brush a mixture of egg and a dab of milk onto each cookie and sprinkle with cinnamon or carob powder to give extra shine and flavor. Makes 2 - 4 dozen cookies (depending on how big you make each cookie). In the pic below, I used a mini bone, heart and paw shaped cookie cutters - they came out cute! And they weren’t too crunchy, either!
