Dog Birthday Cake Recipes (The cakes I baked for my dogs’ birthday!)
HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY SIBBY, LIBBY, TYGIRL. NIKKI, NATE & JENNA BEAN!!
To celebrate the birthday of 6 wonderful dogs, I made some delicious dog-safe birthday cakes! Want to make some doggie birthday cakes, too? Just follow my yummy recipes below:
Peanut Butter Delight
1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)
Mix together flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into a ring mold sprayed with a nonstick spray for 40 minutes.
Frost this cake with low fat cottage cheese and decorate with carrot pieces. Store in refrigerator.
Here’s my lovely attempt at this cake (I actually made 4 mini cakes out of this recipe, and topped them with a frosting of cream cheese and cinnamon, then topped them with diced raw carrots, dried cranberries, shredded coconut and then drizzled it with Reese’s Peanut Butter topper! My dogs LOVED these!!!
Banana Carob Chip Dog Birthday Cake
2 cups water
2 ripe bananas
1/8 tsp vanilla
3 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 Tbs baking powder
1 egg
2 Tbs honey
1/2 cup carob chips
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)
In a mixing bowl combine water, bananas, vanilla, egg and honey. Add whole wheat flour and baking powder. Mix well. Pour mixture into an 8-inch cake pan sprayed with a nonstick spray. Sprinkle carob chips on top. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Decorating suggestion: Make both the Cinnamon and Carob frostings (below), then ice the cake with one, and use the other as a decorative trim.
Here’s my version of this recipe - I added Reese’s peanut butter chips to my cake, as well. I made two layers and put the same cream cheese mixture I used for my icing in between the layers. I iced it with a mixture of cream cheese, carob powder, honey, vanilla and shredded coconut. I used regular icing gel for their names and to decorate it, and then added some candy cake letters and stuff. It looks kinda weird here because the cream cheese starts to dry out if not immediately covered, and the candy letters had started to run onto the icing before I had time to take the photo! I swear it looked better right after I made it - but they LOVED it so much anyway! lol!

What are carob chips?? And is there anything else to use in place of them because I have never heard of that.
Thanks.

Small chips of carob are similar in shape and size to “chocolate chips”. Carob contains no chocolate but is produced from the carob plant. Use in any recipe calling for chocolate chips or “chocolate pieces”.
This is the brand I use (found at my local Whole Foods market): http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=172832&prrfnbr=213698
They are quite healthy and safe for both people and dogs! Carob powder is also available at Whole Foods (or pretty much any organic or health food mart). I mix carob powder in a lot of my recipes and frosting, as well as mixing it with goat’s milk for a sweet ‘pseudo-chocolate milk’ treat or in my frosty paws recipe to cool them off in the summer!
You can substitute peanut butter cheaps and/or vanilla or yogurt chips - just be sure there is NO chocolate or cocoa listed in the ingredients. These also usually contain sugar (whereas carob chips do not), so be careful with how much you add (can increase your dog’s insulin and eventually bring on diabetes!)
I hope this helps!!!!
Warmly,
Michele
P.S. You can also buy pre-made carob chip dog cookies at your local Petsmart, Petco and even Wal-Mart (Good Dog Bakery & Three Dog Bakery have carob chip cookies, I believe). My dogs LOVE them and we have not had *any* negative reactions at all!
